No Carve Pumpkin Decorating for Kids

No so long ago I did a post about painted pumpkins, and I’m still basking in the glow of those fun ideas. As you know, we love pumpkins around here.

We’ve decorated them with maps, Duck Tape, Diamond Dust, fabric, glitter, and even sand. I have lots of ideas here on the blog for adults, but I want to make sure not to forget about the kiddos either.

Not that these pumpkins are only a Halloween craft for children. If you’re a beginning Mod Podger or just want something a little fun and festive (maybe you’ve having a Halloween party?), this pumpkin decorating is going to be perfect for you.

Before we get into decorating these little pumpkins, let’s answer a few frequently asked questions about this project. If you already know what you want to do, just scroll to the bottom for the how-to.

Pumpkin Decorating Ideas for Kids

Are you ready to get started? Here are a few frequently asked questions first.

How do you decorate a pumpkin for kids?

The way we’re going to do it is with Mod Podge and small tissue paper circles, but you could do this with a variety of other things. Think about using scrapbook paper scraps, fabric squares, ribbon, buttons . . . the possibilities are endless.

You just want something easy enough for kids to hold in their hands while they’re applying it to the pumpkin.

What paints should you use?

These are no-paint pumpkins, but if you want to incorporate paint into the project, I highly recommend Apple Barrel. It’s perfect for children, non-toxic, and made in the USA.

How do you decorate a small pumpkin?

There’s really no difference in how you Mod Podge or paint a small pumpkin – the difference will be the size of the items you apply. If you go for a small pumpkin, then use smaller bits of tissue paper, fabric, etc.

Pumpkins are very round, so it’s harder to apply large pieces of fabric (for example) without wrinkles. Wrinkles add character, but not everyone likes them!

Mod Podge Matte, confetti, and small white pumpkins

Ready to try this no carve pumpkin decorating for kids? Let’s get started.

Gather These Supplies

  • Small white pumpkins
  • Confetti (thin, tissue paper kind is best)
  • Matte Mod Podge
  • Sponge applicator or paint brush

Note: you can create your own confetti with tissue paper and a paper punch. Stack several sheets of tissue together for a clean punch.

Applying confetti to a small white pumpkin with Mod Podge and a foam brush

Working in small sections, coat a pumpkin with Mod Podge. Layer on single pieces of confetti and let dry. Don’t brush too much over the existing confetti or it will brush right off.

Continue until one entire pumpkin is covered, smoothing as you go.

Sealing the confetti mini pumpkin with Mod Podge

Repeat with the additional pumpkins. Let them dry and apply a second coat of Mod Podge as a sealant, if desired.

These pumpkins are super cute, and easy! My kids would have loved doing this! I guess we technically still can since we still have our Halloween pumpkins that we didn't do anything with!
