Have you been wondering what you can do with Fabric Mod Podge? Here are over 20 projects ranging from fashion to gifts to home decor!
Check out the ideas, then scroll down to the bottom of the post to see a video of three bonus ideas made using this amazing formula.
I was looking through my analytics the other day (don’t fall asleep yet, this isn’t about numbers) and I noticed that a lot of you are curious about something.
You want to know how to use Fabric Mod Podge, aka, Mod Podge Fabric formula. You know, the stuff in the blue bottle.
Since I like to keep all of you happy, here are over 20 ways to use this amazing formula! A lot of people think it’s only for attaching fabric to fabric, but you can do so much more with it.
If you do attach fabric to fabric with this Mod Podge formula then it’s washable (as long as the fabric is washable), which is pretty amazing. This is what the formula was developed for.
And if you attach fabric to something else, this formula is very durable (more so that the original formulas). Do you HAVE to use it on everything? No. But if you have it on hand, it’s a perfect use for it.
Let me know what you think, and I have to ask – which Fabric Mod Podge project will you try first?

Love me some Mod Podge for fabric!!! I have made shirts for my grandsons, onesies for my granddaughter and even shirts for my hubby and sons!!! Such a versatile and fun product to work with because I can do ANYTHING with my Mod Podge products!!!! Thanks for all the great ideas!
I have been putting fabric on glass plates with matte and gloss Mod Podge and am having trouble with finish.
Would Fabric MP work better? Do you sell it and how much is it.
I have been using Mod Podge for years doing decoupage and love it !!!!
Thank you.
Use a soft bristled brush and then sand between coats. To do this, apply the Mod Podge and let it dry an hour. Then use #0000 steel wool and lightly sand the entire surface. Do this between every coat 🙂
I bought a lampshade last year at a thrift shop and I’ve been pondering on what to do with it. Thanks for the great idea! Definitely buying some fabric mod podge this weekend! 🙂
Hi Karen! This is from my FAQ:
Do I HAVE to use Fabric Mod Podge, or can I use the Original formula?
Fabric Mod Podge is really tough, very durable AND it’s washable. So I always use it for projects that need to be durable – like clothing, accessories and furniture. If you are just Mod Podging fabric to letters and hanging them on the wall, you don’t need to use Fabric Mod Podge.
If you are using Mod Podge on fabric-to-fabric (for instance, gluing a patch to a shirt) then yes, you should use Fabric Mod Podge because it is washable.
Audrey – maybe. You could try an upholstery needle. It really depends on the fabric. I’d give it a whirl with a strong needle and just assume you might break it (also go slowly).
Hi I have used fabric mod podge on chairs and vanity cases its great ,I have some vintage star wars fabric that I am going to put on a tray ,do I need to use a sealer as well ,it will have hot cups on it thank you
Hi there! It will! You don’t need to use Fabric Mod Podge though. You can use regular Mod Podge. Fabric Mod Podge is mostly just for attaching fabric to fabric for washability, though I do use it sometimes in concert with Mod Podge Gloss to provide extra durability (like on a table covered in fabric).
I used iron on ink jet photo paper to put photos on fabric & want to make sure they do not peel. Can I use the fabric mod podge and brush over the photos to help seal them
Hi Becky! Fabric Mod Podge is good for adhering fabric to fabric and making it washable. I wouldn’t use it just as a sealer because it is sticky. I’d just make sure the iron ons are washable and iron them on really good. If it’s a good iron on, it won’t peel up.
@Amy, THANK YOU. I had the same question about using Fabric Mod Podge as a sealer on iron-on images. I picked up a bottle with a Michael’s coupon. So now I plan to use it instead for my gift wrapping bows and wreath-making… to hold folded-over ends of fabric ribbon so they don’t fray. This way I can use it for wreaths meant for front doors where they may be exposed to moisture.
Which would be the best Mod Podge to attach thin lace fabric on a pair of sneakers? Does it have to be Fabric Mod Podge as I would prefer a matte finish? My granddaughter wants me to customise a pair for her wedding.
Thanks
Doesn’t HAVE to be Fabric Mod Podge if they are only being used for a wedding. Also you can use any Mod Podge and then spray seal a different finish over the top!
I am wanting to apply a decal to my luggage (which is fabric). I was thinking of sealing it with fabric mod podge, will it work or is it not the right choice for sealing it to the luggage fabric?
Fabric Mod Podge might not be your best bet. Luggage typically has a plastic-y coating woven into the fabric. Simply to make it more durable and stain resistant. What I would try is making patches from Heat n’ Bond (I’d use the Ultra) and apply to my luggage that way. You can also use E-6000 to attach after you make the decal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnAI6Y9LV9E
The reason I wouldn’t use Fabric Mod Podge is because give that fabric weave and the fact that it’s luggage, I just think you need something more durable and tough than an acrylic medium.
I’m new to crafting, had no idea there was so many different mod podge. Thank you for sharing, at least now I know to look for the different ones and what they are used for.
I made a quilt with appliqué. I used fuseable backing to attach the appliqué to the quilt. The edges of the appliqué are fraying (just a little bit, enough to bug me). Can I brush mod podge fabric on top of the appliqué to stop the fraying?
Will using the “fabric” mod podge vs regular mod podge on a shirt make it so it isn’t stiff? I want to fancy up some letters on the upper chest of a t-shirt but I don’t want it to end up feeling stiff and uncomfortable…?
It’s going to be a little stiff at first and get more flexible. Depending on what you are doing you might want to check the fashion section of the craft store – there might be a better product than Mod Podge. Mod Podge is great for attaching fabric or glitter to fabric and have it be washable.
I want to glue pearl beads and ribbon roses to a collar made of white net over metalic gold fabric.
Will Fabric Modge Podge work for this? I am assuming that it will need to be washed at some point.
Hi Carol! You’ll want a fabric specific glue for gems. Mod Podge is meant for adhering fabric to fabric, but not for small gems. You definitely need something strong! Look for gem glue that is washable.
I’m wondering if you can use it to seal paint on fabric paint. Im crafting a hoodie for my boyfriend and I put fabric paint on, with acrylic paint kisses on the fabric paint (I used acrylic because i would be less likely to get sick with it on my lips), can I use fabric mod podge to seal the acrylic paint on the fabric paint so it doesn’t come off when he washes the hoodie?? If no, are there any alternatives??
Hi Valerie! Mod Podge fabric is meant for adhering fabric to fabric so that it can be washable! You should use fabric paint and heat set it to make it permanent. You don’t need Mod Podge for this.
My daughter painted a sweatshirt and she used fabric mod podge to seal it. Obviously she had misinformation on the steps but now it is tacky. Do you know if there is a way to save the sweatshirt? Idea on something she could put over it to seal it? Thanks!
I would try a clear brush on sealer – I wonder if there is one for fabric? That’s what I’d do. If I couldn’t find one for fabric I’d try one from the wood section that’s good for multisurface. That’s the only thing I know to do!
I’m trying to put a fabric picture on poster board I didn’t know about fabric mod podge. Is that why my project bowed in the middle. What can I do now?
I have some heavy decorator fabric that I want to use as a floor cloth. It does not need to be painted on, just a sealer. Is Mod Podge the sealer I need? If so, which one. Thank you!
HI, I have a question..I’m looking for a way to fix a fabric matching game I made for our grand daughter 7 yrs. ago. The photo transfer’s are peeling off and ruining the game pieces. Would this product “Fabric M.P.” seal/protect the game pieces. they are 3 layers thick; back, quilt batting and the fabric front with the picture transfer made with “Avery” brand transfer medium. I really don’t want to have them ruined as it was quite expensive to make and it will be a family heirloom as it has family pictures to match up. The grandkids love to play it, but I am worried they’ll ruin it because the transfer medium is peeling and cracking. Please help me, as I have no idea of what or how to fix this problem. If this fabric modge podge can be used, will it allow the game to be flexible or will it be hard and stiff? I am anxious to get this fixed as our grand children are coming to visit in October.
Any help would be truly appreciated!!
Thank you so much! 🙂
Hi Lillian! You won’t want to use Fabric Mod Podge. It’s meant to attach fabric to fabric and have it be washable, more so than a sealer of fabric. I recommend posting a project in our Facebook group if you can? https://www.facebook.com/groups/craftywithmodpodge
The reason I say that is because I don’t know how to fix it. I think the community might be able to help though! You don’t have to stay in the group, but I think they can help for this.
I am wanting to attach a completed embroidery project to an apron pocket. Will the Fabric mod podge be ok to use on the embroidery yarn? I am wanting to seal the yarn so it won’t fray or catch on things and be able to wash the apron.
I love the lamp shade idea!!
Hey I did a lamp shade a few years ago! Here is the link to mine

I HAVEN’T EVER USED FABRIC MOD PODGE BEFORE – HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE??!!
Oh my gosh… sorry for the caps. It looks like I’m screaming my head off. That’s what I get for not paying attention. 😛
I have been putting fabric on glass plates with matte and gloss Mod Podge and am having trouble with finish.
Would Fabric MP work better? Do you sell it and how much is it.
I have been using Mod Podge for years doing decoupage and love it !!!!
Thank you.
Hi Betty – what problems are you having? Fabric Mod Podge is the same consistency so won’t work any better.
@Amy, I use fabric onmplates as well and seem to always get streaks.. do you have a tip for preventing streaks?
Use a soft bristled brush and then sand between coats. To do this, apply the Mod Podge and let it dry an hour. Then use #0000 steel wool and lightly sand the entire surface. Do this between every coat 🙂
I bought a lampshade last year at a thrift shop and I’ve been pondering on what to do with it. Thanks for the great idea! Definitely buying some fabric mod podge this weekend! 🙂
So what is the difference between Fabric Mod-Podge and regular Mod-Podge. I’ve been using the regular stuff on fabric for years without a problem.
Hi Karen! This is from my FAQ:

If I treat my fabric with the fabric mod podge, is it still sewable? I want to make appliques.

Hi I have used fabric mod podge on chairs and vanity cases its great ,I have some vintage star wars fabric that I am going to put on a tray ,do I need to use a sealer as well ,it will have hot cups on it thank you
Yes, I would use VHT Engine Enamel or a high heat spray. You can find them at the hardware or auto parts store.
Will Mod Podge Fabric attach fabric to walls?
Hi there! It will! You don’t need to use Fabric Mod Podge though. You can use regular Mod Podge. Hi Michelle! You can but it’s going to make the applique probably more crusty that you want. Just for fraying, I’d use fray check: https://www.amazon.com/Dritz-1674-Liquid-Sealant-0-75-Ounce/dp/B000YQKIDY
What Mod Podge should i use to put lace on a mason jar? Thanks
Gloss or Matte are fine! https://modpodgerocksblog.com/mod-podge-lace-mason-jars/

Hi Cheryl! The fabric Mod Podge isn’t meant to be a sealer but simply to attach fabric to fabric, no sew. I would use fray check or something similar.
Can I use ModPodge Fabric glossy on a wool top hat (dull finish) to make it glossy?
