Mod Podge Formulas Explained

So quite a while ago, I wrote a Mod Podge formula guide. I also wrote a post on learning to Mod Podge with an FAQ.

While both of those posts were a labor of love, I still don’t think they were enough to quench the knowledge thirst of you serious Mod Podgers.

And I get it . . . because while those posts are actioned pack with tons of information, they don’t include a lot of detailed information on each formula.

This is because if I wrote a post and included a lengthy description with FAQs and project samples . . . . it would be WAAYY too long!

So long that it would be difficult to find your formula of interest just by scrolling, and you wouldn’t want to read it.

Which Mod Podge to Use

I decided to break out each into its own post – completely dedicated to EACH formula and just that formula!

Instead of having to sift through information, you can learn exactly what you want about your Mod Podge formula of interest simply by clicking through the link below.

    1. Hi Jeannie! I don’t recommend using Mod Podge to repair leather – you’ll want something made for leather. I’d get a repair kit, which can be found online!

  1. is there a Mod Podge product that you put on wording say of a greeting card–when that completely dries you can peel the letters off –it becomes a decal–and you can use that on other items?? years ago I saw where someone had done just that and imposed new decal onto a wedding picture and then decoupaged it– was beautiful!

  2. Iโ€™ve already covered my project with mod podge dishwasher safe, but the finish is too shiny for me. Can I cover it with mod podge matte without causing an explosion or some other disaster to my project?

  3. Hi Amy!
Thank you so much for your help and all the effort you have put into explaining everything! Itโ€™s incredibly helpful!

I was hoping to get your experienced opinion, please, on the best way to try and save a vintage poster I purchased off Craigslist. It is currently attached to a thin piece of wood that has become warped and there are areas where the poster is ripped or has come loose from whatever substance they used to decoupage it to the wood board. I am not sure the best way to approach the piece. Should I get another board to mount it to โ€ฆ.perhaps mounting the warped board to a straight board? Iโ€™m not sure if I can somehow take the original poster off the board itโ€™s been decoupaged toโ€ฆ.is there a secret to โ€˜undecoupagingโ€™???

I would like to be able to hang it on my wall with either a gloss or a satin finish. I would also like the finish to add a bit of protection from the dogs, hubby and small humans with sticky fingers that are likely to touch it.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you have, please! Thank you so much for your time and help!!!

Is it possible to send you a picture of my project in its current state? It might give you a better idea of what I am describing.

    Thank you so much!!!
    Jude

    1. Hi Jude! You can remove things that are Mod Podged, but usually you would ruin the item doing so. You’d have to tear up the poster. Honestly since the decoupage is already done, what I would do is get another board to mount it to. You should be able to straighten out the board by doing this. Another consideration? Depending on how big it is, you could put a towel on top of the poster and put heavy stuff (bricks?) on it to help straighten the board. This only works so well though. I wouldn’t undecoupage it . . . you can put Mod Podge over the top, but since the decoupage is already done, you could use a spray sealer too. Either Mod Podge or a spray sealer would provide the protection you need. ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. Hi there, I am wanting to modpodge ceramic tiles for coasters. Which one should I use? Also do they need to be somehow sealed? I keep hearing that they get sticky and lift when you have a hot cup
    Thank you

    1. Hi Nancy! You can use any one you like. I recommend gloss or matte. Probably matte. Then VT Engine Enamel over the top for hot cups!

  5. Hi!
    Very interesting.
Kindly advise me, is there a podge that’s heat resistant as I’m thinking of making place mats for dining table.
    Regards
    Annette

    1. Hi Annette! There is not a heat resistant Mod Podge, however, a dinner plate shouldn’t get so hot it would affect the Mod Podge. I just wouldn’t use the placemats as trivets and put hot items out of the oven on them. Otherwise, they should be fine!

  6. Hi, i want to decoupage fabric onto raw wood. I have been told so many different things that i’m now really confused. Can you help PLEASE!!!!!

    1. Hi Jane! They did not – it’s still in production. It might be hard to find due to COVID, the craft manufacturers are still catching up!

  7. I have a very large paper wall mural that I spray glued to hardwood but is bubbling and lifting off due to humidity. Iโ€™d there a mod podge product I could use to re-seal it? Is mod podge sold in bulk quantities?

    1. Hi Tara! You can do it using this method: https://modpodgerocksblog.com/poster-on-canvas/ even though it’s on canvas, it’ll be the same. Having said that, it’s kind of challenging. But I don’t know your Mod Podge expertise so if you’re going to go for it, Mod Podge is sold in large quantities at Michaels (gallons for example). You could also take it to a frame shop and have them attach it professionally!
