These DIY Sandals Cost Zero Dollars to Make

These DIY sandals are so easy to make with Mod Podge and fabric scraps – and since I already had the fabric scraps on hand, the cost was $0.

Hi everyone! It’s Ashlee from My So Called Crafty Life, and I am back today to share a Mod Podge sandal project with you guys today!

I have been wanting to try the Fabric Mod Podge for a while now. I am definitely a vintage fabric lover. One of my favorite things in the whole world is vintage flour sack cotton print fabrics.

I have tons of scraps and hate throwing away even the tiniest of scraps from them because they are so beautiful! So, I have been keeping my tiny scraps in a sandwich bag hoping to find a use for them some day.

Well guess what, you can use tiny scraps to make patchwork style fabric wrapped strappy sandals! My tiny scrap hoarding has not been crazy after all.

DIY Sandals with Scrap Fabric

Here’s What You Need:

• Old sandals – or Dollar Tree sandals work as well
• Fabric scraps of your choice
• Scissors
• Mod Podge Fabric
• Small paintbrush
• Fabric glue
• Buttons
• Felt (optional)

Instructions:

First clean off your sandals making sure there is no gunk on them. Gather your scraps, scissors and Mod Podge. Take a scrap and cut it to a strap about a quarter inch wide.

Test wrap the strip around your sandal strap. Cut the strip so it wraps almost all the way around the sandal strap. It can overlap in the back if you like.

Paint a little Mod Podge fabric medium onto your sandal where you want to start wrapping your strips. I started at the middle on each sandal and worked my way to the back on each side.

Paint a little medium on the back side of your fabric strip. Then wrap the fabric around the sandal strap where you painted the medium.

Smooth the fabric on the front of the strap and then around the back. You may need to put a little extra medium on the second end of the scrap if it is overlapping the first end.

Paint a little medium next to the first strip and then on the back of your second strip. Wrap the strip just like you did the first. Continue cutting and wrapping strips next to each other all the way around your straps, glueing them down with the Mod Podge Fabric.

Let the sandals dry thoroughly. Once the scrap strips are dried in place, you can paint a layer of the Mod Podge Fabric over the top of the straps. Let dry completely.

To finish off glue on some buttons or bows to the toe area with a dab of fabric glue.

Aren’t they fun! I have been getting so many compliments when I wear these cuties out! I had such a blast making my DIY sandals.

Part of the fun is seeing them come together with each scrap piece you add. I couldn’t resist using my vintage scraps, but you could use the same technique with any cotton fabric of your choice.

You can really customize the sandals to your own style with the prints and color combos you use. Small scale prints will show best, but some larger prints can be fun too. I hope you all will give it a try.
