This Easy Glitter Mug is Dishwasher Safe!

You can make this DIY glitter mug with Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge – then you can safely wash it without any glitter coming off!

Skills Required: Beginner. This isn’t a hard project, though it does help to have experience with Mod Podge. However, you’ll simply be applying glitter to a mug using decoupage medium.

Make a Dishwasher Safe DIY Glitter Mug

Hello – I’m Dom from Crafted, with a DIY glitter mug tutorial for you today. The best part of this mug? It’s dishwasher safe. The second best part of this mug?

The mug is from Dollar Tree, making this one of those awesome Dollar Tree crafts. You can make so many of these at once for handmade gifts, including teacher appreciation gifts!

You’ll be using Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge, which is such a cool Mod Podge formula. So once you follow the instructions and let it cure, you can wash it in the top rack of the dishwasher and the glitter won’t wash off.

Amazing, right?

Add a bit of glitter-y bling to your morning coffee with this super simple project! This mug is a great craft for teens – they love this idea. Here’s how to make this fun craft.

DIY Glitter Mug Gift

You will need:

  • Mug
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge
  • Fine grain glitter
  • Paintbrush

The first thing you have to do before you can start blinging up your mug is clean the area with rubbing alcohol. This is recommended on the packaging of the Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge.

Painting glitter mixed with Mod Podge on a mug handle

Ok, so there are two ways you can do this. You can mix your glitter into the Mod Podge which I did in this photo.

I felt like this was just going to take way too many coats and was going to be very slow as you would have to wait for each coat to dry before you could add more . . . don’t bother!

Sprinkling glitter over the top of the wet Mod Podge

Instead, coat the handle in your dishwasher safe Mod Podge and generously sprinkle your glitter over the top.

I’m recommending fine glitter for two reasons. One, I think it looks better than the chunky stuff. Two, it will feel better when you’re holding the handle of your mug, enjoying morning coffee. I’m sure of it!

If you have any sections that look a little bare or if you missed bits just go over the blank sections with more Mod Podge and of course, more glitter.

Once your Mod Podge is dry, shake the excess glitter from the handle and wipe off any loose glitter from the body of the mug.

Give the handle a coat of Mod Podge over the top of the glitter. The instructions on the side of the container recommend 2-3 coats.

TA-DA! Pretty cute, huh?

I completely followed the instructions and let the piece cure for 28 days. I haven’t tested my glitter mug in the dishwasher yet, but I have hand washed it.

I’m thoroughly convinced that it has dried long enough for me to put it in the top rack of the dishwasher. I just haven’t had the chance! I’ll let you know how it goes.

What about tumblers? The Mod Podge method uses a coat of Epoxy, but you have to hand wash it. Will the finished product be shiny or dull?

For Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge, the finish will still be shiny but dulled a little. With epoxy it doesn't seem to dulla t all.
