These paper wrapped and paint-dipped candles use the power of Mod Podge to bring some springy life to some boring, dollar store candles.
It still does NOT feel like spring outside my window right now. In fact, it feels so much like winter that I almost have the urge to get my Christmas decor back out just to get through all this snow.
However, instead of taking that crazy person route, I decided to bring some spring inside with a fun DIY project! If you enjoy decorating candle holders, you’re going to love this idea.
These paper-wrapped and paint-dipped dollar store candles use the power of Mod Podge to bring some springy life to some boring, budget finds. You won’t believe what an easy craft these are to make.
Plus, I added some fun “Shine” tags, making these dollar store candles perfect for gifting or just adding some spring color to you own home decor! It’s so easy to Mod Podge on glass; you’re going to love it. Here’s how these votives were decorated.
DIY Dollar Store Candles
Supplies Needed:
- Dollar store candles (I found mine at Dollar Tree)
- Patterned Scrapbook Paper
- Mod Podge Gloss
- Acrylic Paint (I used FolkArt)
- Paint Brushes
- String
Directions:
1. Paint the base of your candles (I did two coats). Let dry completely.
2. Cut paper to fit the middle of the candles. Using a wide brush, paint a layer of Mod Podge Gloss on the back of the paper and on the candle area where you will be putting the paper.
3. Apply the paper to the decoupage area on the candle. Rub the paper with pressure to secure the paper to the candle and smooth out any bumps. Let dry at least 15 minutes.
4. Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge Gloss to the exterior of the paper to seal and finish.
For this step, I didn’t apply Mod Podge outside of the papered area because I wanted the painted area to stay really matte, while I wanted the paper to have the gloss that comes from Mod Podge.
6. Let the candles dry completely.
Aren’t these dollar store candles the cutest? I love how easy it is with Mod Podge to make something that is completely boring into something stylish and fun.
Plus, by using scrapbook paper and paint the color and pattern options are endless, but SO affordable!
Now, if you want to take your candles to another level and give them as gifts or add a fun reminder to “shine”, you can add these fun “shine” tags! Here’s how:
First, using the excess paper from the candles and my craft cutter I cut out the letters. Next, I cut them out into an oval shape and attached them to a white piece of paper using Mod Podge, just the way I did with the candles.
Lastly, I let the tags dry completely, punched a hole in them and attached them to the candles with string! Now they are ready to shine away!
Don’t you love all of the patterns and colors? They almost take away my long-winter blues. I mean, who can think of snow with all of that yellow and pink!
What crafts are you making to bring spring into your home? I would love to hear in the comments! I’d also love for you to check out these other candle crafts:

Very nice! I made one of these, but I used a pretty paper napkin instead of the paper. I also hung tags (though different than yours) I'm gonna write Let Your Light Shine on mine. I'm gonna help the seniors at the senior center do these for their craft on Monday. I only wish they put the label on the bottom of the candle. The label was very tedious to get off of the jars.

Can you still burn these candles?

Yes - the Mod Podge is on the outside, and the paint, so you're good. Having said that, the acrylic products used are non flammable. So they would just melt anyway. But they wouldn't catch fire!

Does the heat from the candle affect the Mod Podge at all? Meaning...will the paper peel off once the candle is burning?

It's not hot enough to affect the Mod Podge . . . no, the paper will not peel :D

These are wonderful and I'd love to make them. I'm wondering though - with the paper on them, it safe to light these?

Yes - the paper is out the outside and not close to the flame. Though you should never leave these unattended (like any candles). Thank you!
