Decorate Scissors with Washi Tape

Learn how to decorate scissors using your favorite patterned tapes and a little creativity! This is SO easy; anyone can do it.

Skills Required: Beginner. You’re going to be using a craft knife along with washi tape and Dimensional Magic. It’s relatively easily but it is a smaller surface you’ll be crafting on (the scissor blades).

Decorate Scissors with washi tape

I love back-to-school supplies. I’m not a very good organizer by nature, so getting new back-to-school goodies is really fun for me because it gives me a chance to get my act together.

It’s been that way since I was young! Speaking of being young, I’m going to show you how to personalize school supplies, and it’s a great kids’ craft.

I personally don’t want to pay a fortune for any of this stuff, so I have a secret – I buy plain surfaces and embellish them the way I like. This year I did it with Scotch Expressions Tapes.

If you haven’t seen these lovely tapes yet, here’s a glimpse of everything I did with them (it wasn’t just the scissors). You can imagine that I squealed when I saw the patterns, because they are bright and fun. And I love bright and fun!

My favorite project of all of the personalized school supplies has to be the Dimensional Magic scissors. So that’s the first thing I’m going to show you how to make, but I’ll also show you the other projects I made as well.

Gather These Supplies

  • Desk accessories and goodies – magazine holder, pencil holder, paper box, binder clips, scissors, dry erase board or whatever else you’d like to decorate with your tapes (they pretty much stick to anything!)
  • Scotch Expressions Tapes in your choice of colors/patterns
  • Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
  • Craft knife
  • Craft glue
  • Buttons
  • Scissors
Washi tape applied to the blades on a pair of scissors

So now that I’ve decorated a pair of scissors with tape, I’m ready to do about 4,000 more pairs. It’s VERY easy. Just run the tape down one side and trim at the top with your craft knife.

Then turn the blade over onto a flat, cut-friendly surface and run the craft knife down either side.

Adding Dimensional Magic on top of the washi tape

Finally, add Dimensional Magic to the top of the tape and let dry for several hours. Then flip over and repeat on the other side.

Applying washi tape to the top of a paper mache office box

While you are waiting for the Dimensional Magic to dry, this is the time to get crazy with your tapes. I just rolled them down the top of this paper box in a row and trimmed.

Applying washi tape around a pencil holder

This pencil holder was easy to decorate, just put a few tapes around the middle.

Gluing a button on top of washi tape on a paper mache box

Do the same with the magazine holder. And then when there is a seam or a “weird” area, make sure to glue a button there that matches.

Decorating binder clips with washi tape

I had no idea if the tape would stick to the binder clips – it did! The Expressions Tapes stuck to pretty much everything that I put them on. It was so fun!

Applying washi tape to a dry erase board

My final project was to decorate the boring extra dry erase/magnet board that I had laying around. I think I know why I like the colors of the tape so much. Check out my pants and toenail color in the edge of the picture (I’m so predictable!).

Here are images of some of the desk accessories in their native environment:

So what do you think . . . are you a converted tape “artist” yet? Would you make these cool desk accessories? With a few rolls of Scotch Expressions, you can decorate more school supplies than you could ever imagine.

Tech styluses are my nemesis. I have a hard time finding them in pen lengths. So to fix that I took two and inserted them inside drinking straws (reuse/recycle). I cuts slits to fit the clips in then cut the straws to the length I wanted. A wood dowel cut to fit into the top end to strengthen the straw. I wrapped one horizontally with washi tape that had the days of the week. The other vertcally with cute floral design. I then coated with dimensional magic. Pretty solid and long stylus, no more carpel tunnel pain.

My fav is def the scissors too! Love that!

It is great how you can make everything match by embellishing with the tape. You would have to spend a fortune to buy coordinating -- well everything-- if you bought it at the store!
