These Mason Jar Candle Holders Are Boho Chic

Use Mod Podge and food coloring to turn make these pretty mason jar candle holders. This project is so easy, anyone can do it! These are great for summer nights, parties, or any holiday.

Skills Required: Beginner. You’ll be mixing decoupage medium with food coloring and dyeing your mason jars. Then you’ll paint on the outside with adhesive stencils.

Hi, I’m Justine from Sew Country Chick – excited to share with you a tutorial to make glass jar candle holders by dyeing Mod Podge. Did you know you could do that? You absolutely can. Grab random jars from the recycle bin or mason jars from the craft store . . . anything works!

There *used* to be a product called Sheer Colors that you’ll see in some of the images – it doesn’t exist anymore. That’s why I’m going to show you how to dye jars with Mod Podge and food coloring. It’s really easy. You’ll love decorating candle holders with this method!

These boho chic mason jar candle holders are very easy to make and perfect for a summer evening party! I could see making several and filling them with candles, giving a romantic and exotic look to the table.

Something I want to call out: you can also turn these into hanging mason jars! Grab yourself some mason jar hangers online (check measurements). Love the idea of making these hanging lanterns. So many possibilities.

DIY Mason Jar Candle Holders

Here is how I made them! I used:

• Mason jar (or any recycled glass jar)
• Glass paint in color of your choice
• Mod Podge Gloss
• Food coloring
• Adhesive stencil
• Spouncers
• Container for mixing

Remove the adhesive labels from your mason jar. Clean with soap and water or rubbing alcohol; let dry.

Add two heaping tablespoons of Mod Podge to a container. Add 8 – 10 drops of food coloring (you can mix colors) plus 1/2 teaspoon water and mix well.

Pour the Mod Podge into the jar and swirl to coat. Place upside down on your work surface to let drain (it should be non-stick) or you can use a separate container.

I put the jar upside down in a little cup to catch the excess Mod Podge. The Podge will eventually drip all the way down and cover the jar evenly. I let mine sit overnight. It dries transparent!

Alternatively, you can place in a 200 degree oven and bake until dry (do not leave unattended).

Make sure your mason jar candle holder is fully dry and cool before moving onto the next step.

Apply an adhesive stencil to the outside of the jar and smooth down. You can paint a portion of the stencil or cover the jar in the design.

Apply a small amount of gold paint (or color of your choice) to the spouncer and then test on a paper towel. Sponge the paint onto the adhesive stencil, covering with paint. Once done, remove the stencil and let dry.

Note: to connect your stencil design (if the stencil doesn’t cover the jar), let dry before applying the next portion of the design.

When that was dry I used some puffy glass paint to make little blue dots you see, to compliment the design. Now you are ready for the party – it’s that easy!

You can dye Mod Podge ANY color, so you can customize for your decor or event. And the stencils can be used with paint or Mod Podge and glitter depending on your mood. How would you decorate your mason jar candle holders?

• Apply an adhesive stencil to the outside of the jar and smooth down. Apply a small amount of paint to the spouncer and then test on a paper towel.
• Sponge the paint onto the adhesive stencil, covering with paint. Once done, remove the stencil and let dry.
• Dot glass paint on your mason jar to compliment the design. Let dry completely before using.

Notes

• Alternatively to allowing the jar to drain, you can place it in a 200 degree oven and bake until dry (do not leave unattended).
