My hubby and I drink a LOT of coffee. We buy in bulk and get the ginormous 2 pound cans. These containers are a great size. I was looking at one the other day and realized it would make a wide, sturdy, and inexpensive base for a DIY cake plate . . . just set a clear plastic or glass plate on top of it!
With summertime almost here, I decided to make a cake stand that was a little patriotic. It will be perfect to use for the Fourth of July. Plus, I had some fun red, white and blue washi tape that I knew could look cute around it. If you don’t have washi tape, you can decorate the outside of your coffee can with decoupage and red and blue tissue paper, too. And if you don’t drink vats of coffee like we do, you can duplicate this project with empty gallon sized paint cans from the hardware store, too.
Recycled DIY Cake Plate
- 2 lb. empty coffee container
- White craft paint
- Washi tape, in red and blue patterns
- Craft knife
- Mod Podge Gloss or Mod Podge Satin formula
- Dinner plate, wide enough to sit on top of can
Remove the coffee can lid and outer wrapper. Paint the can with white craft paint. Allow that coat to dry and reapply another coat, if needed.
Once the paint is dry, apply vertical strips of washi tape around the can, alternating with red and blue colors. Use your craft knife to carefully score the tape against the metal rim of the can.
Seal the washi tape and paint on your DIY cake plate by brushing on a coat of Mod Podge over the entire exterior of the can. Allow the decoupage to dry. For additional protection, you can seal the decoupage with an acrylic spray.
The large can should be wide enough to support your plate (just look for a dinner plate that will sit firmly on top of the container). This makes clean up easy . . . all you have to do to clean your cake stand is lift off the plate and wash it. You can use a white plate, but I liked the look of a clear plate.
And when you are done with your party, you can reuse this container to store stuff or set it out for your patriotic décor. I think a potted plant would look adorable in it. I also love that you can decorate this coffee can in any color or theme for a party. Quick, easy and almost free party decorations! Love!
