This Easy Geode Canvas Makes Beautiful Wall Art

Learn how to make a DIY geode canvas in three steps! This home decor project is a great way to add beautiful art to your wall, on a budget.

Skill Level: Intermediate. It helps to have experience with paint and Mod Podge for this project since there are several steps. The good news is that if you attempt this canvas, it’s pretty forgiving.

How to make a geode canvas

If you’re looking for a cool piece of art for your wall, I’m excited to share with you today! I’m going to give you instructions to make a geode canvas – two versions. Not only that, but there’s a video in this post that shows you how to do it. Make sure to watch.

If you look for geode canvases online, there are a lot of options for purchase that are pretty inexpensive. BUT – 99% of them are printed images of geodes on paper. That means no dimension, no true metallics, and no glitter.

You don’t get the true “geode” effect.

This geode wall art, on the other hand, is dimensional, glitter-y, and stunning in person. There are a variety of ways to make this project, and I’m going to show you two. Once you learn the method, you’ll be able to create any style you like.

Geode Wall Art

You’re going to make this project in three steps. First you’re going to paint pour a canvas. Then you’re going to add glitter paint for more sparkle. Finally, you’ll mix Mod Podge, rock salt, and glitter to make beautiful geodes on your design.

I’ll start with the purple canvas (first image), then go into the gold canvas (pictured below). Both have a similar process with just a slight difference in the ingredients!

NOTE: every piece of geode wall art you make has the potential to look very different based on the order in which you pour colors and where the paint decides to go once you pour it. Embrace the imperfections or “natural state” of the art you are creating.

Let’s jump into the projects!

Purple Geode Canvas

Gather These Supplies

  • Wood canvas panel (10 x 10) – you can also use real canvas
  • Mod Podge Gloss
  • FolkArt Pouring Medium
  • FolkArt Glitterific – Unicorn (or other glitter paint)
  • FolkArt Acrylic Paint – Perfect Purple, Titanium White, Baby Pink, Podge Pink, Ultramarine Blue (or colors of your choice)
  • Purple Glitter
  • Rock Salt
  • Bowl
  • Spoons – one per paint color and one for rock salt
  • Cups – one per paint color
  • Paintbrushes
  • Spouncer (optional)

Paint the Canvas

Mix a 2:1 ratio of Perfect Purple paint and pouring medium. Repeat this with Titanium White, Baby Pink, Podge Pink, and Ultramarine Blue.

Pour your mixtures onto your 10 x 10 wood panel one at a time. Use one of the spoons or a toothpick to swirl and create a marbled effect. Let dry. If the pouring didn’t cover the entire canvas, that’s okay!

Apply the Glitter

Organically/randomly apply Unicorn Glitterific (or other glitter paint) to an edge or corner of your canvas and let dry. There’s no formula here; it’s more of a freeform application based on areas your paint pour didn’t reach or where you would like your geode to be.

I can recommend that for easy application of glitter paint, a spouncer is nice. It’s a foam tool with a foam sponge at the end of the handle. A paintbrush tends to smear the glitter around. Dabbing the glitter with the spouncer provides an even application. You’ll want to use several layers of glitter paint regardless.

Make the Geodes

Add one spoonful of Mod Podge Gloss and one spoonful of purple glitter to your bowl. Mix the Mod Podge and glitter until well incorporated.

Add five spoonfuls of rock salt to the Mod Podge and glitter mixture. Mix in the rock salt. Apply your purple rock salt mixture to the edges of your glitter areas as shown for the geode effect.

If you want to add more rock salt crystals to the canvas, make more (you can use multiple colors as well!).

Let your geode wall art dry completely (around 24 hours) before hanging or displaying.

Gold Geode Canvas

Gather These Supplies

  • Square canvas (12 x 12)
  • Mod Podge Gloss
  • FolkArt Pouring Medium
  • FolkArt Glitterific – Purple(or other glitter paint)
  • FolkArt Acrylic Paint – Perfect Purple, Titanium White, Pure Black, Ultramarine Blue (or colors of your choice)
  • Gold Glitter
  • Rock Salt
  • Bowl
  • Spoons – one per paint color and one for rock salt
  • Cups – one per paint color
  • Paintbrushes
  • Spouncer (optional)

Paint the Canvas

Mix a 2:1 ratio of Perfect Purple paint and pouring medium in a cup. Repeat this with Titanium White, Pure Black, and Ultramarine Blue (in separate cups).

Pour your paint mixtures onto your 12 x 12 canvas, one at a time. Use one of the spoons or a toothpick to swirl and create a marbled effect. Let dry. If the pouring didn’t cover the entire canvas, that’s okay!

Apply the Glitter

Apply Purple Glitterific (or other glitter paint) to an edge or corner of your canvas and let dry. As I noted in the first project above, you’ll want to layer the glitter.

Make the Geodes

Add one spoonful of Mod Podge Gloss and one spoonful of gold glitter to your bowl. Mix the Mod Podge and glitter until well incorporated.

Add five spoonfuls of rock salt to the Mod Podge and glitter mixture. Mix in the rock salt. Apply your gold rock salt mixture to the edges of your glitter areas as shown for the geode effect.

If you want to add more rock salt crystals to the canvas, make more (you can use multiple colors as well!).

Let your geode canvas dry completely (around 24 hours) before hanging or displaying.

Now that you’ve learned how to make a few projects, here are some examples that use the methods above as well as metallic paint (FolkArt Treasure Gold is a good option for bold metallics):

I love all of your canvases but the blue one is absolutely gorgeous! I'd love to see more of it along with directions on how you made it. Thank you for sharing this. It gives me the impetus I need to get my craft room in order so I can paint. Again, thank you!

All your painting are beautiful. I want to try to add glitter to a painting that I purchased a while ago?

Your canvases are beautiful. I would be delighted to grace the walls in my home with them. When I can purchase the items needed I will certainly have a try at creating one. The pink is my favourite. Thank you for the very clear instructions. Deirdre
