Today I finished working on a new craft, but for my son this time. My little guy loves to draw and his art supplies, especially his colored pencils, markers and regular pencils are all over the place. I wanted to create containers to help keep them organized.

A couple months ago, I grabbed one of these cardboard containers at Dollar Tree in the party section. I wanted to do something with one, but wasn’t sure what.

Then I got an idea to make them pencil holders for my son. I’m doing his room in a nautical theme and these will go perfect in there.

For this project you’re going to need:
Supplies

  • Cardboard Tubes
  • Scrapbook Paper
  • Paint
  • Matte Mod Podge
  • Foam Brush
  • Decorative Rope
  • Scissors
  • Pencil

Getting Started

Once I decided what I was going to do with the one I already had, I ran out to the The Dollar Tree and grabbed two more. I went through my scrapbook paper and had my son pick out his favorite patterns.

I pulled out my “trusty” Mod Podge and some paints to get started!

Step 1 – Add Your Scrapbook Paper

First I took off the ribbon on the front, then I measured out my scrapbook paper. Once I had the perfect size I added a little Mod Podge around the container. I didn’t need to add much.

I wrapped the scrapbook paper around the container then added a little more Mod Podge to the end to keep in place.

Step 2 – Paint the Top of the Lid

Next I painted the tops of the containers. I only needed to add two coats on them. Letting each coat dry 20 minutes.

Step 3 – Attach Decorative Rope

Finally I wanted to add a little decorative rope to the top. I painted on a thick coat of Mod Podge and started wrapping it around.  The Mod Podge kept it in place perfect!

As you can see I did add a chalkboard label to the front. I really wasn’t a big fan of how it turned out. But that can be an option you might like.

Finishing Touches

After they were all finished I had my son gather up his art supplies!! These are going to be perfect for him.

Here they are with the lids on.

These are great for him and me as well. Now I’m not going to see his art supplies all over the floor in his room (hopefully)!

I have so many more great ideas for his new room. I can’t wait to get started and share with everyone the progress. I’m sure there will be a couple more Mod Podge crafts to do!

I hope you loved this craft. If you’d like to get more craft project ideas and inspiration, be sure to sign up for my newsletter! Get my best ideas, right to your inbox.

I've never even considered using Mod Podge to glue anything other than paper. I can see that I need to expand my thinking. I really like that rope/cord glued onto the top of these holders. Thanks for posting this project...I'm off to Dollar Tree!

I used some large food tins and decorated them with paper and bits of bling and ribbon.
