DIY Keychain from a Soda Can

This DIY keychain is so unique – it’s made from a soda can! You can make your own version using your favorite soda and Dimensional Magic.

I know there are many of you out there with a Diet Coke addiction – you know who you are. Are you interested in sharing said addiction with the world? Maybe through this unique recycled craft?

Here’s how to make this craft at home!

Gather These Supplies

• Empty soda can
• Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
• Computer and printer
• Keychain findings
• Needle nose pliers
• Can opener
• Scissors
• Pen
• Hammer and nail

Rinse out the soda can and let dry. Take off the top with the help of a can opener.

I think it goes without saying – but I will say it anyway – BE CAREFUL when cutting up a pop can. The edges can be sharp! Also, be careful not to bend or crease the can in the spots you want to use it. It does show through in the finished project.

Create a variety of hearts and circles in a Word doc on the computer; print and cut them out. Decide which sizes you like best for which sections and use the shapes to trace onto the can. Leave just enough of a line to cut by – not so much that it ruins the can if you don’t cut exactly on the line.

Grab your hammer and tiny nail. Set the shapes on a cardboard box or other surface. Use the hammer to puncture the top of each shape with the nail.

Apply the first coat of Dimensional Magic and let it dry the allotted time. (Best to have a needle or pin handy, in case there are air bubbles in the Dimensional Magic when you apply it. You will want to pop those so they don’t dry onto the surface that way).

For me this looked good, but I wanted it to be thicker. I applied three coats, letting dry between coats, and it looked SO GREAT! But, my hole had filled in, so I needed to punch it again. Good and Bad. Some worked, but one cracked the Dimensional Magic and it all popped right off the pop can.

So, ultimately, this is the way that worked for me:

1. I hammered a hole, did just one coat of Dimensional Magic before hammering the hole again if needed, adding my jump ring, and then applied the additional two coats of DM. 
2. On one I added the jump ring before applying any coats of Dimensional Magic, and this worked as well. 
3. I also did one coat on the back side of the shape for aesthetics and continuity.
