I’ve got one of “those” dads that is hard to shop for. I think many of you know exactly what I’m talking about! My dad is retired and treats himself to whatever he likes – so there’s no use in buying him something from the store for Father’s Day! Thankfully there’s a loophole . . . he loves handmade gifts. I knew this year that I’d be putting together something handmade, from the heart, that he would really enjoy.
Thinking about Father’s Day this year, I put myself in my dad’s shoes for a moment. Parenting is complicated, and he and my mother raised 5 (yes FIVE) kids . . . and did an amazing job. Both of my parents worked, and I know they struggled with feelings of insecurity and wondered if they were doing a good enough job with my brothers and I. Then I compare that to parents of today – who have even more challenges given the prevalence of social media and everyone sharing “picture perfect” moments. For parents these days, it’s easy to feel insecure! That’s why I wanted to send my dad this “reverse care package” of gifts made just for him. I want him to know that I think he did a great job, and I appreciate how hard he worked for us, and how he continues to support us in many ways.
Minute Maid recognizes that all parents wonder if they are doing a good enough job. Through their #doingood campaign, Minute Maid is reminding parents of all the wonderful things they do to make a positive difference in their family’s lives on a regular basis. The #doingood campaign is a perfect way to remind YOUR parents what a great job they did with you, and help them overcome any self-doubt they may feel. This reverse care package is just the way to do it! Watch the video below to see what this is all about:
I picked some very specific items for my care package that I knew my dad would love.
The etched glasses are because my dad is the anchor of our family. He’s a grill master, so the BBQ rub is to support one of his favorite hobbies. The frame is because my dad is an awesome woodworker! I also included his favorite Minute Maid juices and drinks to fill the glasses.
My dad has always and will always do the right things for his family – even with five grown children! A reverse care package is just the way to flip the care package tradition and show your parent that you’re thinking of them – and that you know they are #doingood.

Let's start with the etched glass!
Glass etching medium is very easy to use. Simply apply it on your design with a foam spouncer brush in a well-ventilated area. It doesn't run. Leave it there for five minutes, then rinse under warm water! Remove ALL of the etching medium before removing the vinyl.
Let's make the frame.
Cut your saying out using a die cutter. If you don't have a die cutter, use clip art and a craft knife and mat. You can even print up a saying in a word processing program and cut it out that way (just make sure the letters are thick enough!).
After your letters are cut (if you used a die cutter), you'll apply transfer tape to the design and peel it up so that you can apply it evenly. Press the transfer tape down on the surface of your frame, smooth, and pull the transfer tape up. The design is left behind!
Finally I'll share the BBQ rub with you. My dad LOVES to grill so I know this is going to be his favorite.
All you'll need to do is download the BBQ dry rub labels above HERE. There are two sizes, 2″ and 2.5″, depending on the size of your jar lid. Print the labels out on adhesive paper and cut out.
All you need to do is mix together the following ingredients in a container:
- 2 1/2 tablespoons cumin
- 2 tablespoons paprika
- 2 tablespoons garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons onion powder
- 3 tablespoons chili powder
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons sea salt
- 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
- 2 teaspoons black pepper
- 2 teaspoons white pepper
Then place your BBQ dry rub in a container and adhere the labels as shown. Your dad will likely know how to use it, but if he doesn't, it's applied to the meat by rubbing on both sides before grilling and left on for 30 minutes to a few hours. It makes your grilled meats delicious!
I can't wait to send my dad his reverse care package. He's absolutely going to love it!! How will you show your parents that they are #doingood? Head to MinuteMaid.com/carepackage to find even more ways to remind parents they are #doingood!
