Easy initials faux tree carving canvas

Easy initials faux tree carving canvasI’ve told you many times that I have a forestry degree – I love trees and I love nature. For that and many other reasons, I also love stuff that has a woodgrain pattern. I thought about wood carvings recently, and how I like the thought, but I just don’t have it in my heart to take a knife to a tree. So I came up with a way to get the look without going a cuttin’. This is a gift that you could give your sweetheart for Valentine’s Day, and put the date you met/anniversary date/any other significant event on it. Pick any colors you want to customize. Here’s how I made my faux wood carved canvas.

Gather These Supplies

  • 8” x 10” oval canvas
  • Mod Podge Satin
  • Martha Stewart Crafts paint – Porcelain Doll
  • FolkArt Extreme Glitter – Hologram
  • Scrapbook paper – woodgrain pattern
  • Cardstock – coordinating colors; I used aqua and teal
  • Die cutter or other tool for cutting the letters and numbers
  • Ribbon – coordinating
  • Ruler
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun

IMG_6828Place your canvas face down on the back of the woodgrain paper and trace. Cut out using scissors.

IMG_6830Mod Podge the paper to the canvas. Add a medium coat of Mod Podge to the front of the entire canvas and smooth. Turn the canvas over and smooth from the back as well. Let dry for 15 – 20 minutes.

IMG_6831Paint the wood heart with Porcelain Doll and let dry. Then paint it with two coats of Hologram Extreme Glitter and let dry – you need sparkle, right?

IMG_6852Decide which letters and date you are going to on the front of the canvas – you can use the date of your first date, your marriage date or any other special day. Cut letters out of the cardstock using stencils or a die cutter. If you don’t have a die cutter like me, then just print letters off of the computer or use free clip art as templates.

IMG_6854Mod Podge your letters to the front of the canvas (I measured using the ruler just to make sure I was centered).

IMG_6846Attach ribbon around the edge of the canvas using hot glue.

IMG_6855Give the front of the canvas a final coat of Mod Podge, and then glue the heart onto the front as well.

Easy initials faux tree carving canvasYou can hang or display on a stand . . . whatever you like!
