To me there is nothing more sad than children who can’t enough to eat. Did you know that 1 in 5 kids in America struggle with hunger? That is 16 million children that need our help. Kmart is working together with Share Our Strength, a non-profit corporation, to help gather 1 million meals for hungry kids. The program is called “No Kid Hungry.” That is an awesome goal and I’d love for you to help them reach it with me! Kmart is going to be matching donations up to $100,000.* Here are some more facts about the No Kid Hungry program:
- In a recent survey, Share Our Strength found that only about 40% of parents said they were aware of locations for free summer meals. The No Kid Hungry campaign is working to change that.
- No Kid Hungry efforts have led to millions more meals served to kids in the summer months.
In 2012, No Kid Hungry invested $1.8 million, providing 274 grants in 40 states. In states with No Kid Hungry campaigns, there was a collective increase of nearly 4.1 million meals above the number served in 2011.
If you’d like to support this program, please join me on Thursday, August 8th at 1pm EST for a Twitter party. Let’s encourage Kmart and Share Our Strength to reach the goal of 1 million meals. The hashtag is #1millionmeals, and there will be prizes. We’d love to see you there!
PS – There might a fun guy named Ty Pennington at the Twitter chat as well – just sayin.’
* This amount was determined on the basis that $1 can help connect a child with up to 10 nutritious meals, which is, in turn, based on the individual experiences of Share Our Strength’s grant recipients. It is provided to illustrate how community investments can be used to help end childhood hunger. Each contribution made to Share Our Strength represents a contribution to its original mission. Donations will be used to reach the highest number of children facing hunger in America. Share Our Strength is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
