Geometric DIY statement necklace.

Geometric DIY statement necklace

Hello Fellow Mod Podgers! My name is Steph from the blog The Silly Pearl, and this is my first post as a contributor on Mod Podge Rocks! I’m sharing how I made this vinyl geometric DIY statement necklace Mod Podged with glitter. It’s sparkly enough for the holidays, even a New Year’s Eve party, but it’s not too blingy so you can wear it anytime with any outfit. I was inspired to use vinyl by a humble remnant at the fabric store. This is the first of many ideas in my head, and I still have plenty left since I only used a few scraps.

Mod Podged Glitter Geometric Necklace

Supply list:

Matte Mod Podge
Foam brush
Vinyl fabric (you could also use leather, bonus points if it’s upcycled!)
Glitter (even more bonus points if you stole it from your kiddos’ stash)
Fabric scissors
Ruler (not shown)
Small hole punch (1/16”, not shown)
Jewelry supplies: 6mm jump rings, chain, lobster clasp (optional), pliers, wire cutters.

Cut three triangles with fabric scissors. As seen in my very technical diagram below, the top side of the triangles are all the same length (1 5/8 inches). Then from there, the bottom point of the triangles just extend downward, if that makes sense. So measuring from the midpoint of the top side, the top triangle is 5/8 inches long, the middle triangle is 1.5 inches long, and the bottom triangle is 2 1/8 inches long. Then just cut the other two sides of the triangle to meet that bottom point. Set the middle triangle aside.

Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the top (smallest) and bottom (biggest) triangles.

Then sprinkle glitter onto the Mod Podged surface, and press the glitter into the Mod Podge. Wait for that to dry, about 20 minutes. Then, brush with another light coat of Mod Podge to seal (and to keep the glitter from falling off) and allow to dry again, longer this time (about an hour). Remember that Mod Podge will dry clear, so don’t fret…your sparkles will return!

All dry! Grab the middle triangle and stack it in between the two glittered ones.

Punch a hole through all three layers in each corner with the hole punch. If you’re using leather or something thicker, you may need to use an awl or a leather hole punch thingy. Then attach a jump ring into each set of holes.

You could attach your chain to the jump rings at this point and be done with it (make it long enough to throw over your head and you don’t need a lobster clasp). But I thought it would be interesting to cut out some small triangles, add glitter using the same process, and punch holes at the top and bottom of each. I needed an additional three jump rings, plus an additional one inch of chain in between the small triangles and the pendant.

And you’re done! I love the vinyl and the glitter together, a luxurious combo but not so much that I can’t wear it with my my mom uniform of shirt, cardigan and jeans. But of course, I’d much rather wear it on date night.
