Ways to get involved with your community.

Hey Mod Podgers! If you read this blog on a regular basis, you know that I am passionate about my dogs – affectionately called “the piggies.”  I have three of them, and they are all rescues.  Roxie is the one I’ve had the longest, and she is pictured above (she’s 9).

I also have Walker.  He is 10.  I got him when he had terrible heartworm.  He was abused – I don’t know to what extent, but I know he was pulled from the home he was in because of it.

Nellie (age 13) is also an abuse case, and when I got her she was so skinny because no one fed her.  That is no longer the case.

Why am I telling you this stuff?  Not to make you sad, but to encourage you to get involved in your community.  I support animal rescue and volunteered for Atlanta Animal Rescue Friends for years (including running the foster program).  It is and has been an amazing experience helping animals, and I would encourage anyone who is looking for a pet to do it.

Animal rescue is not the only option for you though – you can also volunteer for a wide variety of organizations including food banks, homeless shelters or educational programs.  Those groups always need warm bodies.

Volunteer Match is a great place to find something locally that meets your criteria (there are even things you can do online).

If volunteering simply isn’t possible, consider the gift of money, which is always needed.  I like Charity Navigator because it has ratings and tells you which charities are worth gifting to.  It’s a great resource for those who want to make sure their money is being used wisely.

Are you ready?  Now get out there!  The world needs you.
