Hallo! Introducing two of my favorite things, in one small Christmas tray – stripes and polka dots. If you met me, you would find somewhere on my person one of these two patterns. What’s better than stripes or polka dots you ask? Both of them together. The reason that I made this tray actually stems from receiving this decorative image transfer kit from the wonderful people at Tilano.
My first project with this kit? The tray you see above. I transferred an image of polka dots. You too can have a chance to transfer images! Why? Tilano is giving a kit to a Mod Podge Rocks reader. Aren’t they nice? This is GRRReat time of year for something like this – personalized gifts are big. Big I say! Each kit comes with enough goods to make several projects. Projects like ornaments, coasters, magnets. . . any little gifties your heart desires. I tested the kit with this tray and it works wonderfully, which means that I am now ready to mass produce magnets with my pugs’ faces on them. Anyway, here are the giveaway rules:
FolkArt Acrylic Paint - Calico Red, Grass Green, Titanium White
Mod Podge – Glitter Silver
Tilano Decorative Image Transfer Kit
Wood tray, no larger than 8.5″ x 11″
An image to transfer – I based mine on the Martha Stewart Moneybags template
Small square of green felt
2 red buttons
Stencil tape – 1/4″
Flat Paint Brush
Beacon Fabri-Tac
Scissors
Pencil or pen
Paint your tray. That includes the bottom – no arguments. White on wood takes a few more coats.
These instructions are in your kit, but I’ll give you the short and sweet version. Print the image you would like to transfer onto the computer paper provided. Prepare the tray and the image for transfer by coating with a thin layer of the included medium. Allow to dry (time specified in the kit) and cut out image.
Tip: if there are words on the image, print BACKWARDS. The image flips when placed down on a surface.
Coat the tray with transfer medium. Make sure you cover throughly. There’s a sponge brush included in the kit but I couldn’t find it for this part. Whoops.
Place the image face down. Spread thoroughly (spreader included). Wipe the spreader off after each swipe – you don’t want to get medium on the back of the image. Let dry for time specified (I believe it’s 3 hours).
Once the image is dry, wet the back with cool water. You’ll see the color start to come through. Cover the entire image and then peel the paper away. Image transferred! Pretty cool and easy, huh?
Now time to dress up your tray! Notice I hit Starbucks before beginning this part. Needed energy.
Use the stencil tape to section off the stripe pattern. Secure down and paint your stripes. I did the top green stripe first, allowed to dry and then did the bottom red stripe. Peel the paint away and touch up if you need to. I’m going to give you my biggest stripe secret – I ALWAYS have to do some touching up. So don’t feel bad if you have to.
Allow the stripes to dry and then coat the entire tray with Mod Podge. The silver glitter shows up nicely on the white. Allow to dry and give a second coat.
Trace four holly leaves with your pen or pencil and cut out. I just freehanded them.
Use your Beacon Fabri-Tac glue to adhere the felt pieces.
Add the button in the center and press down. Do the same thing on the other side and allow to dry for a few hours before using.

- Take a picture of my granddaughter’s drawing.
- Use the transfer medium to put the picture either on a tray.. or on a small table that I’ve been wanting to refurbish.

Oh I love your tray! I definately have to make one. I would make everything with this kit, starting with coasters for my mother. She just remodeled her house so there is actually room for all of us when we come visit (which is several times a week) and she needs super cute coasters to protect her new tables from our many drinks.

I love the idea of the tray. I think I would like to transfer pictures of all my siblings (4 sisters, 5 brothers) onto a tray for my Mom.
I am pregnant and due in 5 weeks, so I would transfer an image of our son and our sonogram onto a box for the grandparents…or the future baby now that I think about it. A keepsake box. Tons of ideas!!

Hmmm… I’m not sure what exactly I would do with it but I do think it would include some of my wedding pictures and some of my sister’s wedding pictures for my Mom for Christmas.

I would make a really neat coaster set for my partner’s family with pictures she’s taken of our house and yard through the seasons. I think I’d also make a shadow box for my nephew with pictures of the two of us throughout his life, and fill it with little trinkets from his childhood, too.
I like your tray so much that I would absolutely copy your idea for a baby tray – to carry all the little baby food containers from the fridge to the table. Of course, I love the idea of a family name on a tray, coasters, photos, who knows. Very cool product.

I love this! I have 3 vintage pictures of my mom and my aunt baking and cooking in the kitchen (from the 50′s). I would love to use those pictures and make a serving tray!!!
I have some great, whimsical artwork created by my kids (5 of them, all grown up) that I would love to translate into usable pieces. I have been collecting footstools, tiny chairs and small tables to build a fun set for my two grandsons, but was stuck on how to decorate – but transfers of art by their mom, aunt and uncles would be perfect!

Awesome! I really want to make a memorial ornament or plaque for my cat that just passed away a month ago and have been trying to figure out the best way to do that. This kit would be perfect! I also really enjoy making personalized coasters so I was really excited to see their marble coaster kit!
I’m wanting to create a new lampshade for my Eiffel Tower lamp in our living room. What I’d do is use this to print images of the Eiffel Tower and put it on a lampshade that I’d make. That way when it lights up I’ve got backlit Eiffel Towers!

So many ideas for the transfer kit. We’re going to be doing some bedroom shuffling in our house (finishing a new room for the oldest, moving the boys into her old room, and getting a nursery ready for baby #4) so I just know I’d use it to decorate something for one of those rooms!

Okay I knew I loved you (LOL)! I have a love affair with Mod Podge (I call it modge) and I have a PUG!!! LOVE him! Anywho I would love this project and I am not 100% sure what I would use it for, but I like the tray idea. I just purchased some awesome digital scrapping kits that would be fun to use along with a family photo.
PS I have a ghetto metal filing cabinet I have been meaning to toss out in the garage (or charity). You seriously just gave it new life. I am going to modge it in January! WOOHOO! Thanks for all your fabulous ideas!

I just rescued an entertainment center from a sidewalk. After coaxing a friend to help me move it to my apartment with the help of a dolly, attempting to take it upstairs and failing, then attempting to take it apart to take it upstairs, getting the help of Handy Randy the HandyMan, having him break a piece because of impatience, waiting for glue to dry on said broken piece, the entertainment center orphan has a new home in my apartment. That said, it is not very pretty, and I would use this kit to decorate it with pictures taken from my postcard collection. and add mod podged fabric on the glass doors to finish the face lift.
